How large can my solar system be?

The maximum size of your solar system is dependent on local policy, physical constraints, and electrical constraints.

Yukon

The size of your system will depend on a few factors:

  • The physical size of your roof or property.
    • Most roofs are suitable for solar in the Yukon with the exception of steep (slope greater than 4/12) North facing roofs.
    • Ground-mounted systems require approximately 2 square meters per solar panel in multiples of 16 solar panels. The surface must be flat and level.
  • The AC/DC limits in your Micro-generation program pre-approval.
    • The AC (alternative current) limit is based on the electrical transformer capacity powering your property.
    • The DC (direct current) limit is based on your average annual electricity consumption. You are allowed to produce up to twice your average annual electricity consumption with renewable energy in the Yukon.

NWT

The size of your system will depend on a few factors:

  • The physical size of your roof or property.
    • Most roofs are suitable for solar in NWT with the exception of steep (slope greater than 4/12) North facing roofs.
    • Ground-mounted systems require approximately 2 square meters per solar panel in multiples of 16 solar panels. The surface must be flat and level.
  • The limits set by the Net Metering Guidelines
    • The AC (alternative current) limit is based on the electrical transformer capacity powering your property.
    • The DC (direct current) limit is based on your average annual electricity consumption. You are allowed to produce up to twice your average annual electricity consumption with renewable energy in the Yukon.
